What an offseason for the Suns. Since acquiring Beal, giving Phoenix the league’s most talented offensive trio in Beal, Booker and Durant, general manager James Jones has steadily built the rest of the roster in ways that didn’t seem possible given Phoenix’s financial situation.Even as he enters his fifth season, Bol’s overall value is not completely known — he’s started only 35 games — but the skill and upside are clear. And he’s coming off his best season in Orlando.
Doing it this way cost the Suns cash and a future pick, but it also generated a $6.5 million trade exception that can possibly be used at the trade deadline. Of greater wonderment is who exactly, will be Phoenix’s backup point guard now that Payne is gone. Right now Goodwin is the only nominal point guard on the main roster, but he played more as a combo guard in Washington. The athletic but erratic Lee is also a possibility but would need to be upgraded from his two-way by spring to be playoff-eligible.
Trading Payne may make using those seconds in other trades more difficult, however, given how top-heavy the roster now is. The Suns have four players on max contracts … and everyone else is making the minimum. Trading for a “middle class” player is thus virtually impossible without Payne’s $6.5 million salary as a match unless the Suns find a way to trade
