The “festering issue” of whether Holyrood has the power to hold its own Scottish independence referendum must finally be resolved, the nation’s top law officer has said. 🔴 ChrisGreenNews

It had been expected that the court would hand down its judgement before Christmas, but Lord Reed’s comments suggest it might take longer than this to reach a decision.

She highlighted comments made by Lord Mackay of Drumadoon 24 years ago in the build up to the creation of the devolved Parliament in 1999. She continued: “Only this court can provide an authoritative ruling and provide certainty and clarity to the Scottish Government, the Scottish Parliament and the electorate.”

“The issue of Scottish independence is a live and significant one in Scottish electoral politics,” she said.
