Why Sussex is England’s cultural hotspot this summer, from world-class vineyards to contemporary art
The initiative aims to reveal why Sussex has been such an inspiration for artists and writers, from Paul Nash, Edward Bawden, Eric Ravilious and the Bloomsbury group to Rudyard Kipling. Set across 600 acres of chalk soil vineyards that slope down towards the sea, the estate produces some of England’s most acclaimed wines, including an exceptional sparkling rosé. Enhancing the landscape this summer is a free-to-visit art installation by Turner Prize-shortlisted British artist Nathan Coley.
But Charleston isn’t just a museum piece. At the entrance, another Coley work proclaims “I Don’t Have Another Land”, while Langlands and Bell has created a series of cleverly positioned mirrors in Vanessa Bell’s attic studio.
