Selby District Council wants to build 43 homes on the main car park in Tadcaster.
The car park was used regularly by people attending events at the town's Riley Smith Hall, objectors said
A total of 3,100 people in Tadcaster - which has a population of nearly 6,350 - are against the scheme. Patrick Tunney, who handed in the petition to the council on Tuesday, said building houses on the central area car park was not a "feasible, viable or deliverable proposition" and was "not in the long-term interests of the town".
He said the proposal to build an underground car park did not solve the town's parking needs and did not provide a like-for-like alternative. The car park scheme is just part of a plan for more than 300 new homes in the townHowever, Conservative councillor Andrew Lee said it was "unfair" to say everyone was against the plan.
