A union official said: 'We are extremely angry.'

The Unite union has said talks with government ministers aimed at resolving NHS strikes did not go well, describing them as "a missed opportunity".

He did not to deny that his government could follow Wales by offering a one-off payment to public sector workers to ease the cost of living.Following discussions at the Department of Health, Mr Kasab said the government had suggested that any one-off payments would have to be based on "productivity savings".

The GMB union, which represents paramedics, 999 call handlers and other ambulance staff, said no new pay offers had been made for this financial year and nothing concrete offered for next year. Pat Cullen, general secretary of the Royal College of Nursing, said his remarks offered a "chink of optimism", but would not stop strikes scheduled for later this month.

Monday's negotiations includes scheduled meetings between Education Secretary Gillian Keegan and the National Education Union and NASUWT; as well as Health Secretary Steve Barclay and representatives from Unison, Unite and the Royal College of Nursing.
