A teacher kissed and touched a teenage girl months after she left high school after he said they made an “emotional connection” during one on one tuition.
A Teaching Regulation Agency tribunal ruled that Mr Pate’s actions were sexually motivated and banned him from ever teaching again. Mr Pate, now 40, was working at St Augustine’s Roman Catholic School in Clitheroe when he first came into contact with the girl. He had been working there as an English teacher since 2008 and regularly gave the girl 1:1 tuition in Year 11, having previously tutored her one year earlier.
The girl’s dad found out about the relationship when he saw a text message which was meant to be sent to the teacher. He informed the school, accusing Mr Pate of grooming his daughter, and an investigation was launched. Mr Pate then appeared “flustered” at school and told one colleague that he had “strong feelings” for the girl when she was at the school and “had acted on this” after she left.
Another member of staff told the tribunal he had reviewed the book given to the pupil and was concerned about some of the comments in the long, personalised note. He told the tribunal that he found this “particularly concerning as it was clear evidence that the Teacher had started to develop a relationship, or at least encourage the feeling of a relationship developing whilst [she] had still been on the school roll.
