The Dutchman had it easy in midfield last season with his first-choice trio all performing but Man United's poor form has left him with a decision to make.
Rarely has Erik ten Hag enjoyed an abundance of options at Manchester United and the Dutchman is not one to rotate unnecessarily.
Casemiro had been absent for the opening weeks of last season and Eriksen was finding his feet, but once the trio clicked they showed no signs of being displaced. They were unbeaten as a starting trio for 19 matches until being part of a 1-0 defeat at West Ham in May. It was a no-brainer for Ten Hag to keep that run ticking over.
And so the United manager has gone from having his midfield trio set in stone to only really having one undroppable in club captain Fernandes. And even then, it is not as a result of his performances. Further forward, Mount's spot is very much up for grabs and a host of Reds are pushing for their shot. Not only Eriksen, who was impressive off the bench against Brentford, but the hero of that win Scott McTominay.
