The Dutchman has a high success rate with his Man United transfers but two previous efforts to put out a last-minute fire have failed.
Erik ten Hag would not have expected left-back to be such a pressing concern in the final week of the transfer window but circumstances beyond his control have made it so.
Ten Hag has an encouraging hit rate when it comes to his signings at United, with most of his major arrivals an undoubted success. But one area in which he has struggled is in sourcing swift replacements to put out unexpected fires. Viable options were few and far between and so United secured a half-season loan for Wout Weghorst. And while the 31-year-old's effort could never be questioned, two goals in 26 appearances cannot be seen as a success.
Links to a new left-back are not setting the world alight. United are interested in both Marc Cucurella and Sergio Reguilon, owing in part to the fact that their current clubs - Chelsea and Tottenham respectively - are willing to talk. Barcelona's Marcos Alonso is also on the radar. Ten Hag's hit rate at United has been high but his two previous attempts to put out a fire have not worked out. Third time lucky, then.
