Jon Rahm began a long Masters Sunday with 30 holes to play and a four-shot deficit to make up. By sunset, he was a 2x major champion and the unquestioned top player in the sport. JustinRayGolf explains how.
Rahm’s week got off to a brutal start, when he four-putted the opening hole of the Tournament and made double bogey. He’s just the second Masters champion to start his week with a double, joining Sam Snead in 1952. In the last 30 years, only three men have won a major with a double-bogey or worse on the first hole of the week. The other two are Woods and Lucas Glover at the 2008 and 2009 U.S. Opens, respectively.Rahm came from multiple shots back to win both of his major titles.
After steamrolling to major championship wins for the first halcyon years of his career, Koepka has struggled some in the final round when in contention recently. The first six times he was inside the top five of a major through 54 holes, he had a final-round scoring average of 68.7. The last seven times he’s been in that position — starting with the seven-shot lead he nearly lost at the 2019 PGA – his scoring average is four shots higher .
In Mickelson’s last 44 non-Champions Tour events – including those on the LIV Golf Tour – he has just two top-five finishes. They have been at the 2021 PGA and this week at Augusta. Mickelson is just the second player to finish in the top three at the Masters in four different decades, joining Sam Snead.Jordan Spieth finished in a tie for fourth, his sixth career top-five finish at the Masters.
