Players such as Luther Blissett and John Barnes may have gained more headlines for their impact in Watford’s golden era, but the midfield engine room of Les Taylor and Kenny Jackett was such an integral part of the success Graham Taylor’s sides achieved.
Critics who dismissed the Hornets as a long-ball side often failed to recognise the qualities Jackett and his teammate brought to the party, but the Watford-born son of former Vicarage Road wing-half Frank Jackett added a cultured and considered approach to his hard work on the left side of the pitch.
Having risen through the ranks, Jackett made his debut in an otherwise forgettable 5-0 defeat at Sunderland in April 1980 and would go on to play a total of 428 times in all competitions, closing in on the club’s appearance record when injury ended his career at the age of 28.
