This week's trip down Vicarage Road memory lane recalls this wonderful defender WatfordFC
Watford had been leaking goals at a significant rate at the start of the 1984/85 season, conceding 33 in their opening 13 games, before Graham Taylor paid £225,000 to sign a new centre-half from Rangers. John McClelland would not only prove an instant success but would go on to establish himself as one of the finest defenders in the club’s history.
The Northern Ireland captain’s running style may not have been the easiest on the eye, but he was deceptively quick. With his leadership qualities and calmness under pressure as well, McClelland became an integral cog as the Hornets continued to hold their own at the top table of the English game, remaining at Vicarage Road for another season after relegation in 1988 before joining Leeds United in June 1989.
Capped 53 times, McClelland played in all four home counties and in all four divisions of the Football League. Here are ten pictures from our archive you may not have seen for many years to enjoy again of McClelland’s time at Vicarage Road.
