Workmanlike is a word frequently associated with Ken Furphy’s Watford side that won the Division Three title in 1969 to elevate the club to the second tier for the first time in its history – with the exception of one player.
Stewart Scullion had arrived from Charlton Athletic four years earlier as part of the deal that took the legendary Cliff Holton in the opposite direction, scoring on his debut in a 2-1 victory over Exeter City. His sometimes dazzling wing play was to illuminate a Watford side that went close to promotion in 1967, finishing third in the table, before they did secure their rise two seasons later.
Scullion made a total of 348 league and cup appearances over two spells at Vicarage Road, returning in December 1973 after moving to Sheffield United two-and-a-half years before, and scored 55 goals.Here are ten images from our archive you may not have seen for many years to enjoy again of Scullion in action.
One of Scullion's best known goals was this strike at Manchester United that earned Watford a 1-1 draw in the FA Cup fourth round in 1969.Scullion is beaten to the ball by the Carlisle United keeper in the 1970/71 season.
