It’s not hard to understand why NHL players chase seven- or eight-year deals. But what if more hockey players took an approach similar their NBA counterparts, and signed a one- or two-year deals for lots of money. MarkLazerus explores.
“The guy could barely walk,” Karlsson said. “I’m like, ‘How are you going to play?’ He’s like, ‘I’ll be fine. Four weeks from now, I’ll be fine.’ And then he plays in the playoffs, and he’s fine. That just shows, that’s what you need.”Karlsson said Stone was a “winner,” and that he could tell that from the moment he joined the Senators in 2013. Karlsson believes he’s a winner, too.
Karlsson, coming off his first 100-point season at age 33, was open and honest on Sunday about his desire to be traded from theto a contender. It’s inevitable, yes, but it’s also incredibly difficult. Karlsson is only halfway through an eight-year contract that carries an $11.5 million cap hit, top among NHL defensemen and fifth-highest in the league overall. Between his full-movement clause and the league-wide cap crunch, it’s difficult to make such a trade work. Karlsson feels stuck.
But were he to hit the open market this summer, McDavid could command upward of $15 million a season.
