Terminal cancer conman scammed best friend out £59,000 for fake hospital operations
A gambler who conned his best friend out of £59,000 by pretending to have terminal cancer has been jailed for 16 months.
McCarthy pled guilty at Glasgow Sheriff Court to the single charge of obtaining £59,000 by fraud. The court heard McCarthy moved from London to Glasgow in 2017 and befriended Mr Doyle. "He stated that he only had five years to live and as being treated at the Beatson cancer clinic in Glasgow. He said he had to go to London for medical treatment only available there."
Mr Doyle also continued to pay McCarthy a salary when he was not working due to "receiving medical treatment." Mr Doyle continued to pay McCarthy through to July 2021. The victim last heard from McCarthy who stated he was going into hospital for an operation on July 13.Mr McKnight said: "He sent a picture of a scar on his head which he claimed was the result of a brain operation."
