The ancient Scottish well once believed to be haunted by evil spirits and cause boils

Pictish sites are among the most fascinating places to visit in Scotland, dating back many centuries and home to some incredibly fascinating artefacts.

This is certainly the case with St Columba's Well in the small Highlands village of Invermoriston, which was at one time believed to be haunted by evil spirits. The historic well can be found at the site where a church once stood.View gallery Thought to date back to the 6th century, the well is named after the man who supposedly blessed it. St Columba was an Irish abbot and missionary evangelist who is credited with spreading Christianity in what is today Scotland among the Pictish people.

Before Columba visited, locals considered the well to be haunted by evil spirits who caused the water to be poisonous and inflict boils and ulcers on those who came into contact with it.After being cleansed, the well was used by Columba to baptise those converting to Christianity. Even after he left, locals continued to say that the well could cure everything from hangovers to infertility, giving it the name St Columba's Well.
