If you journey to Aberlady Bay, approximately 40 minutes out of Edinburgh by car, you may notice unusual rock formations in the sand — but they are actually the remains of two submarines
While summer may be long over, there's still nothing like heading to the beach and breathing in that fresh sea air. If you're looking for an extra reason to head to the coast, though, one beach less than an hour's drive out of Edinburgh offers something truly unique.
The bay includes a number of unique habitats, from salt marshes to sand dunes, that have been undisturbed by humans. Both submarines are partially buried in the sand, making them easy to mistake for large rocks. They are also badly deteriorated, though many features can still be identified. The midget submarines were towed to Aberlady Bay in 1946 and tethered to a large concrete block. Here, they were fired upon by RAF aircraft to test the effectiveness of their bullets against submarines' hulls.
