Award-winning mosque, IKEA and £45m leisure complex: The big developments coming to Preston in 2023
The original structure was built in 1802 to carry goods across the Ribble between Preston and Walton Summit. It was largely rebuilt in 1935 after being badly damaged by high flood waters and in 1966, a new deck was installed to replace the previous timber one. The bridge was closed in 2019 amid safety fears.
Last year, a competition to design a new bridge for the location – staged before the project had been confirmed as forming part of Preston’s Levelling Up Fund bid – drew entries from all ages, including children, design students and grandparents.
Ikea announced the plan in October and has remained tight-lipped on when the new unit will open, only saying that it wouldn't be before2022. It has now taken a key step with the submission of the planning application which would allow it to operate the dual purpose collection point and showroom at Deepdale.
Another planning application submitted this month reveals that a 19-storey tower block housing 120 apartments could soon be added to Preston's skyline.would be bigger than anything else currently in the city centre and would only be eclipsed by the planned Foresters Hall structure which has yet to be built but does have planning permission.
If approved, the currently unused site on the corner of Moor Lane and Walker Street will be developed to house "120 high quality residential units" with a mix of one and two bedrooms. The ground floor would have a communal area with workspaces for remote workers and the roof would have a shared terrace capable of holding up to 100 people and with views over the surrounding city centre.
