The most infuriating part of the latest Ant-Man reveals a wider problem in the Marvel ecosystem
, it’s sad to say, is not good. It is not good in many, many ways. The weirdly blank performances, the thunderingly dull fights, the nothingy plot: it is not good.
It happens all the time. Halfway through a conversation, in the middle of a firefight, whenever someone has anything even mildly revelatory to say: the mask partially retracts so you can see their face, and then whoever’s underneath says their important thing. Then, perhaps as a final flourish, they wang it back across again and boing off.
The MCU has been chugging along for 15 years now and it’s built up a raft of little tics and instincts which let you know you’re watching a Marvel movie. Like someone cracking a tension-puncturing gag or an admiring look at a brand new super-suit a hero’s just put on. The helmet thing, though, is so irritating once you notice it that it sets you thinking about when exactly you started to drift away from Marvel.It’s hard, because you love Paul Rudd. Everyone loves Paul Rudd.
