The bizarre history of turkey alternatives from previous Christmas shortages ✍️ DrAnnieGray for ipaperviews
But all is not lost. Let’s face it, if we really liked turkey, we’d eat it more than once a year. And while turkey is eaten outside of Christmas, it is overwhelmingly associated with the festive season, and has been for several hundred years., and until the 1960s turkey wasn’t the most-eaten Christmas meat anyway. Perhaps we should think of this as an opportunity – a chance to free ourselves from the tyranny of the turkey and embrace alternatives from Christmasses past.
When turkey was introduced to Europe in the early sixteenth century, it caught on fast. It was impressive and versatile. It tasted better than peacock, was easier to farm than bustard or heron, and could be eaten older than swan. But it remained just one bird among many. Until the mid-Victorian era, turkey was rarely the centrepiece. It was often served boiled or put in a pie. For the British, there was only one meat to serve at a celebration and that was roast beef. It was customary to serve plum pudding – we now know it as Christmas pudding – with the beef.
