Hutchesontown C was razed to the ground in 1993, after years of debate surrounding ongoing issues with the building - which had initially thrilled new tenants in the 60s. The detonation did not go to plan.
Glasgow's Queen Elizabeth Square flats were demolished in 1993 after years of controversy, in a tragic incident that saw one woman killed and four others injured.
In the BBC Scotland documentary, which aired in 1993 as part of the channel's Ex-S series, a group of tenants describe the feeling of first entering their new homes in the sky. As it happened, the reality was slightly different. The balconies which hoped to give residents their own personal outside space were wind traps, and saw damage to doors and windows.
The grand vision of having gardens in the sky with sun, light and space - opening up to wide green spaces was the brainchild of Sir Basil Spence. He was commissioned with Hutchesontown C in 1959, and on revealing the design told the Glasgow Corporation’s Housing Committee: “On Tuesdays, when all the washing’s out, it’ll be like a great ship in full sail.”
