As a community we need to be focused on uniting in the face of a rising tide of a hate rather than on trivial issues
But is that what Cooper is doing? Or is the answer much more simple: that Leonard Bernstein happened to have a large nose and the costume work to make him look like Bernstein included a nose? Bernstein’s children said that Cooper’s portrayal of their dad’s “nice big nose” was “perfectly fine”, adding in a statement: “We were touched to the core to witness the depth of his commitment, his loving embrace of our father’s music, and the sheer open-hearted joy he brought to his exploration.
But the kerfuffle over something as trivial as a nose is a sign of a larger malaise, both within the Jewish community and society at large. These distractions, whether they be Jewface or cancel culture more generally, are a tremendous waste of energy at a time when we don’t have much to spare. For an idea of how small-time this issue really is, even David Baddiel, a man who has concerned himself with every possible accusation of Jewface for years, has said he’s not getting involved.
There are other, real things to deal with as well. Contrary to what many conspiracy theorists might think, Jews are not immune to the cost of living crisis. As revealed by, Jewish children in London schools are going without kosher food as the cost spirals to a level that catering providers can’t afford. This again is a real problem. One that if you were to go out into the streets and put to Jews, they would care far more about than Jewface.
