Natalie Thompson is unsure how she caught the virus but it led to a horrific seven year struggle
A mum spent years being misdiagnosed while a devastating condition left her feeling ‘locked in her body’ and unable to speak.
“I started to lose my voice in November 2015 so I saw the GP who told me I had tonsillitis,” Natalie says. “My first symptoms were my voice cutting out mid sentence and as it got worse it ended in voice loss. I then struggled with my voice for two years in which I visited the GP five times and wasn’t referred at any point for a camera check.
Natalie had no other symptoms, only voice loss. When she was looked at by a doctor with a camera, the doctor not only found growths on the vocal cords, but also found that Natalie’s voice box had become ‘so tight from the muscle tension that when [the doctor felt it] she went and got another doctor to feel it because she was so shocked as it had moved up into [Natalie’s] jaw’.
“When I have an operation I’m put to sleep under general anaesthetic, they put a camera down into my throat and cut out the growths which of course leaves scar tissue each time. I am then not allowed to speak for 48 hours and limited voice use for two weeks. “Small tasks like going to the shop or answering my phone can be so difficult and cause a lot of anxiety,” says Natalie. “I get stressed and frustrated very easily and am taking tablets to control the depression and anxiety it has caused.
