From her origins on the grimly misnamed Jamaican plantation Paradise, where her unusual education comes at the price of assisting her master’s experiments on the other slaves, Frannie travels to London where she is “gifted” – another gross misnomer – as a servant to George Benham . Attending his wife Marguerite in the couple’s sumptuous Mayfair mansion, their relationship quickly develops beyond mistress-maid into something more romantic.
Both women find in the other some glimmer of the freedom they have been denied all their lives. It’s revelatory at first, but ultimately no match for the social structures that keep them apart. “Some things cannot be brought into the light”, says Marguerite of their romance. “Then let it be done in the dark,” replies Frannie.
