The line-up of the coronation concert seems merely to confirm that Britain is a country with no idea what or who it is ✒️ _emilybootle
It would be trite and dangerously close to sycophancy to wonder what King Charles thinks about all this, but: I wonder what King Charles thinks about all this? The palace reportedly tried to book several other, eminently more of-the-moment, acts for the concert, such as Styles , Ed Sheeran and Adele, none of whom were available.
Whether it signals anything about attitudes to the monarchy, whether the artists did not want to or truthfully could not perform, the result is a concert in which a mish-mash of incongruous acts, singing uplifting songs like “All Night Long”, “Firework” and, erm, one of the ones by Olly Murs, will fuel a national feeling of: we know we should be happy but my jaw is locked from smiling! Which, one imagines, is probably quite close to the feeling inside Buckingham Palace.
Perhaps this is how it should be. Topless men with Union Jack face paint. Mums going feral with bunting. Slight ambiguity surrounding online references to the “Cozzy” . Feeling smug that Americans don’t understand. And a Take That reunion, sans Robbie, smacked on the telly while spooning neat chicken mayo into your mouth from a plastic Asda punnet.
Perhaps what the hysteria surrounding this weekend says about British cultural identity is that whether it’s Elton John or Pete Tong, King Charles or Queen Elizabeth, God-save-them or off-with-their-heads, this is a nation dedicated to embracing chaos, and enjoying ourselves at all costs. What’s the difference, really, between “pledging allegiance” and ordering your fourth pint?
