This creates a strange year-zero effect, in which their own accountability is suspended while the current management of the affairs of state is pilloried as inferior, lacking in insight.
We have to remember that these indulgences are our tasty dessert, our petits fours and coffee. Their very nature of amiability and affection between hosts can reinvent the past, wiping away any responsibility for supposed mistakes and missteps in their political careers. They enhance the roughage and vitamins of ministers and their shadows being cross-examined, but they can’t become a substitute for proper scrutiny.
