Just four people know the 'secret recipe' behind Holden's Original ice cream - which has been made in the same shop in Edgworth for almost a century
The village has a population of just over 2,000 and at its heart, where a set of crossroads mark the routes north to Haslingden, south to Bolton and east to Darwen, there is a butcher's, a pub, a post office and, what for almost 100 years has been hailed the best in the county, an ice cream shop.
In 1963 tragedy hit Richard's family when his parents were killed in a plane crash. Then aged just seven Richard was sent away to boarding school and it was only in 2009 when he properly met up with Marion. Marion Holden, now in her 90s, still lives next door and pops into the shop 'three or four times a day' to see how the business her parents set up is doing. "If she's not impressed with something she'll tell me!" Richard laughs.
