'I am determined to drive forward action to tackle this issue head-on'
Some days there is nothing better than having a takeaway, from pizza to Chinese or fish and chips, the list of options is almost endless for a night you don't fancy cooking. However, the UK government is hoping to tackle a new issue "head on" - and this means big changes for takeaways across the country,
Items no longer allowed to be sold include single-use plastic cutlery or balloon sticks, polystyrene containers and cups, and single-use plastic plates, trays and bowls. It is hoped that by banning these items, it will help protect the environment and stop the pollution of pieces of plastic being irresponsibly discarded.Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Thérèse Coffey, said previously: "I am determined to drive forward action to tackle this issue head-on.
Additionally, the exemptions for the use of food or drink in polystyrene containers and cups are "if it needs further preparation before it is consumed" meaning that if the food or drink needs water added, or needs to be microwaved or toasted. However, there are no exemptions for single-use plastic cutlery and balloon sticks and will be banned altogether.
