The Home Office compensation system is not working. It is not fit for purpose and should be replaced by an independent scheme, writes Diane Abbott MPTHERE ARE a number of MPs who seem to believe the Windrush scandal is over, and they have done their duty by the victims. They are wrong on both counts.First there is the abject failure of the compensation scheme for victims.
Some found the experience of applying for compensation has become a source of further trauma and others have been put off from applying for the scheme altogether. There remains an excessive burden on claimants to provide documentary evidence of the losses they suffered. This is simply is an extension of one of the causes of the scandal itself.
In reality, tens of thousands have been caught up in the same racist and discriminatory spider’s web in relation to jobs, housing, right to remain and deportation. This stretches well beyond those encouraged to come here from the Caribbean. There are huge numbers of victims from Africa too and from Asia, who were all treated terribly.
But almost immediately there were politicians complaining about the alleged negative effects of migration. There is no recorded instance of these bigots, from across the political parties, understanding that migrants create value for society and for the economy.
