While ministers dig in and refuse to talk pay with unions, public opinion is hardening in favour of NHS workers

The NHS is braced for what could be its worst day since the early weeks of the pandemic.

Thousands of paramedics and 999 call handlers are joining the 24-hour walkout on Wednesday, after final talks between the Health Secretary and union leaders failed to resolve the dispute.and NHS leaders are warning that patients’ safety is at risk. At the heart of the stalemate is the Government’s refusal to even agree to discuss pay, let alone negotiate a more favourable deal for NHS workers.

The strategy of ministers is clear – to dig in and let the waves of industrial action roll on until the public eventually turns against nurses and paramedics. It is a dangerous game for the Government to play. And, apparently, the public can see right through it.A Savanta survey published on Tuesday showed net support for nurses has actually increased, by seven points, since the walkouts were announced last month. More than half of people now blame the Government for the strikes.
