'There's a problem and we need to address it'. Chancellor Rishi Sunak says the government has to work 'very hard' to address people's fears following the sentencing of Sarah Everard's killer Wayne Couzens. KayBurley:

Ms Everard, 33, was abducted, raped and murdered by then-Metropolitan Police officer Wayne Couzens, while Ms Nessa, 28, disappeared on a five-minute walk near her home before being found dead.

The Crime Survey for England and Wales for the same year, which includes people who did not report their case to police, shows that 7.1% of women aged 16 to 74 had been raped, compared to just 0.5% of men in the same age group. For the year ending March 2020, 2% of all men and 1.3% of women were attacked.

Crown Prosecution Service data for 2020 shows that of the 58,845 rapes recorded only 2,102 were prosecuted and 1,439 resulted in convictions.Experts often refer to sexual assaults as"hidden crimes" as they are rarely reported to police. But they were much more likely to tell someone they knew well than a health professional or someone in a position of authority. In the aftermath of Sarah Everard's abduction and murder in March, Boris Johnson met with senior ministers at Downing Street to discuss how better to protect women and girls from violence.

Following the sentencing of Wayne Couzens – Ms Everard’s killer – Met Police Commissioner Dame Cressida Dick also said the force would soon be publishing a new strategy for tackling violence against women and girls. Many criticised those who suggested they should not go out on their own, arguing men should make an effort to make them feel comfortable instead.
