Inside the Lancashire inn where the Queen had her first ever pub lunch
The death of Queen Elizabeth II has not only seen an outpouring of grief over the past week but also allowed people to reflect on otherwise forgotten moments.
The Queen and Prince Phillip stopped by the Inn at Whitewell in 2006 for a celebratory birthday lunch before visiting the nearby Burholme Farm. While it may be unexpected for the head of state to pop for a cottage pie and apple crumble, it perhaps make a lot more sense when you realise she owns the pub.
The Inn at Whitewell View gallery Its history with the ruling classes dates back much further though and in the 1300s, the Inn at Whitewell was a small manor house occupied by the keepers of the Royal Forest. Inside the inn are twenty-three en-suite bedrooms which have been individually designed with antique furnishings, paintings and prints. Many have open peat fires with and overlook the river.
