My prediction is that we will see a hung parliament at the next general election, and I would urge Ed Davey to work with Labour to revive our country’s fortunes ✒️ NicolaHorlick via ipaperviews LocalElection2023

The big question now is whether these local elections are an indication that the Lib Dems are seeing a revival. Sir Ed described this morning’s result in Windsor and Maidenhead as a “breakthrough”. Greg Hands, the Chairman of the Conservative Party, tried to brush it aside in a radio interview but couldn’t disagree that the Lib Dem’s success in the South of England potentially put at risk the seats of Dominic Raab and Jeremy Hunt, among others.

I would argue that this is the beginning of a return to the mainstream of British politics for the Lib Dems. There were 91 seats in the 2019 general election where the Lib Dems were in second place and the majority of these were held by the Conservatives – these represent Sir Ed’s “blue wall”. The success today demonstrates that it is possible for the party to unseat bastions of Tory power.

And what if a Lib Dem revival leads to a hung parliament? After the horror of the 2015 election, will the party really be prepared to enter into coalition again? My personal view is that there is no point in being in politics unless you are prepared to participate in government. For decades, the Lib Dems have carried the flag for electoral reform, which would, if introduced, lead to coalitions being the norm.

My prediction is that we will see a hung parliament at the next general election, and I would urge Sir Ed to work with Labour to revive our country’s fortunes. His price should be a reform of the electoral system through legislation. We definitely do not need another referendum on any subject after the disaster of 2016.
