Turkey Brook has been transformed following a restoration that did one vital thing similar projects often overlook: it reconnected the waterway with its hyporheic zone 💧 SerinaSandhu1 reports
, experts such as Stubbington are clear that more needs to be done if we want our river-saving efforts to last.
“When it’s in a straight concrete tunnel, you don’t have much habitat, you don’t have any flow variety. All you could really see down there when you looked over the railings was silty water, a few rats and quite a bit of urban litter. It was just really sad.” “A river cannot function if it’s not connected to its hyporheic zone and its floodplain, but we don’t really talk about it… it’s arguably as important as water quality and quantity,” says Dr Biddulph.
“Restoring physical processes – such as, the horizontal connection between the channel and the floodplain and the vertical connection between the surface and groundwater – are necessary to sustain the restoration over the longer term,” she says. Biologist Katherine Lynch says: “It is important because the hyporheic zone circulates water beneath the surface delivering oxygen and removing metabolic wastes, modulating temperature – cooler in summer, warmer in winter – filtering and cleaning the water, recycling nutrients and providing habitat.”
Anne Robertson, an ecology professor at the University of Roehampton, says: “It’s a refuge for the very young invertebrates, larvae like caddisflies or mayflies. The very young individuals live down there… they can escape from larger animals because they can’t actually fit there.”
