'San Ashtonio': Lost bars and clubs of Greater Manchester town's 90s and 00s nightlife heyday
Manchester is a city renowned for its vibrant nightlife, but not so long clubbers also flocked to another Greater Manchester town for a memorable night out.
Universal Universal was a club on Stamford Street that closed down in 2008. Formerly a conservative club, it first became a nightclub in the 1980s called Yuppies and then later Sparx before becoming Universal. The Bedroom Formerly the Pitt and Nelson pub on the corner of Market Street and Old Street, it was one of the oldest pubs in Ashton. According to the Ashton-under-Lyne blog, it became the Pitt and Nelson in 1807, shortly after the deaths of Admiral Lord Nelson and Prime Minister William Pitt the Younger.
Legends Formerly a Yates' Wine Lodge, Legends was another staple nightspot on Stamford Street. In 2008 the building was heavily damaged by fire.
