The Toronto Maple Leafs finally won a playoff round. Who cares? Well, you should. DownGoesBrown shares five reasons why it matters:
The question of why the Leafs couldn’t win had. Early on, in the first years of the cap era, it wasn’t a tough puzzle to crack. The Leafs couldn’t win in the playoffs because they never made it because they were bad. It was a poorly run franchise, first under John Ferguson Jr. and later under Brian Burke and Dave Nonis. They were a team without a plan, never contending but never rebuilding, proudly and defiantly dumb the whole way.
The other option was even worse. Maybe the Leafs weren’t winning because they just weren’t getting bounces. They’d been to overtime with a chance to ice a series three times, where even one goal changes the entire storyline. It never came. Instead, guys got hurt, weird penalties got called, and the tiny margins always seemed to break against them. Maybe there’s just. If you’re flipping coins, sometimes they just keep coming up tails.
Now? We get a break from all that. Oh sure, some of it may still be true. But now we can tell that voice in our head to shut up for a few weeks. The Leafs figured out how to want it and/or the coin finally came up heads, and it doesn’t really matter which one you pick. There’s a fine line between being loyal and being a sucker, and we can argue over which side the typical Leaf fan falls on. It’s probably both.
And yes, I know — you don’t like Leaf fans because your brother-in-law is a Leaf fan and he’s a doofus, or that one lady you work with gets a little too loud about them, or you’ve run into some jerks on Twitter, and it’s somehow led you to form a strong opinion about an entire fan base. That’s OK too. It’s sports.
