This is the second time the exhibition golf series will be held this year after the last edition featured NFL quarterbacks Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers teaming up to face Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen in June. The upcoming edition will be Woods’ third appearance on “The Match,” and it will be the first appearance as event competitors for McIlroy, Spieth and Thomas.’s instant analysis:The inaugural edition of “The Match” was held in 2018, and featured Woods and Phil Mickelson at Shadow Creek Golf Course. Woods also appeared in a 2020 event with Peyton Manning facing Mickelson and Brady in a charity challenge. Thomas worked as a commentator for that event.
Thomas won the PGA Championship for the second time in his career, while McIlroy won three times during the 2021-22 season and is coming off a win at the CJ Cup in South Carolina last month. Spieth won the RBC Heritage in April. “The Match” features an alternative format and is played for charity. For the last event featuring Brady, Rodgers, Mahomes and Allen, the QBs teed off at each hole and teams selected their best tee shot to play, with them playing their own ball to the hole. Only the better score from each side was counted per hole. That edition also featured 12 holes.This is Woods’ third appearance in a Match, dating back to the first one in 2018 against Mickelson.
