“People” covers how a brand treats the people who built it and keep it going, including how to check whether a brand has received The Fair Tax Mark accreditation to whether or not a brand supports charitable causes.
Finally, the section on sustainable sourcing considers the bigger picture of a brand's contribution, from whether they offset carbon emissions across their entire production lines, to what terms such as ‘net-zero’ and ‘Meanwhile, efforts are already being made to streamline the process even further by The Cosmetics Environmental Scoring Consortium.
“If we can give consumers absolute support to challenge the brands or switch to brands who are being transparent with their eco practices, doing so becomes a very good commercial decision for brands to make," says Jayn. "Going green isn't just good for the planet, it's good for the bottom line.”But it's not all up to the brands.
As a consumer, we must all reduce, reuse and recycle, only buying what we need and throwing away less, while trying to use reusable, refillable or recyclable packaging. We can also use products that have genuine sustainability credentials, and take the time to check them using the Planet Positive Beauty Guide.
Another pledge is to be mindful of how we use our products, reducing water or taking the extra effort to recycle the packaging. Finally, we must all speak up and let brands know what we expect of them and what matters most to us.
