on Friday to the backdrop of muffled bells and gun salutes on the first full day of the reign of King Charles III., where he is understood to have been at his mother’s side at the moment of her passing, the emotions and the practicalities that attend the passing of the longest-serving monarch in British history began to become manifest.
Here was a day in which normality – trains still ran, children went to their lessons and commuters still hurried to their desks – mingled, jostled and collided with the millions of realisations that Elizabeth II is no more, and to myriad personal and institutional extents,At midday, church bells in city centres and overlooking village greens up and down the country, their clappers wrapped in leather muffles to dull their sound, began to ring for an hour.
And so, as the UK entered its period of official national mourning to end on the day after the Queen’s funeral,, some shops closed their doors, and countless people made individual pilgrimages to pay their respects. It fell to the Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby to validate a sense of collective mourning – a show of public feeling that would been largely alien to the United Kingdom that the Queen presided over when she acceded to the throne in 1952. He said: “Bring all your grief and anxiety, bring the sense of loss with complete honesty. Let us not pretend that this is anything but the most enormous change, the most enormous blow, especially to her immediate family.
