TikTok posts have the lifespan of a mayfly, but the sight of Mr Hancock striding down a beach, lip-syncing to the lyrics of “I’m Just Ken”, will live long in the memory of those unfortunate enough to have viewed it 🖋️ Simon_Kelner for ipaperviews
The only conclusion is that we have reached a time when some politicians really don’t give a toss what we might think. They believe their own long-held narrative that they’re relatively badly paid, and that theirs is a largely thankless task, played out in front of a merciless media. Why shouldn’t they seek fame, and especially fortune, in other realms to make up for it?, done the public speaking bit, and now appears to be harbouring the ambition of being an influencer.
The modern world is a curious place, where infamy and disgrace are marketable assets, as long as enough people notice you. What might Hancock influence people to do, or buy, or think? I suppose that doesn’t matter.
There is no history on TikTok. It lives only in the short-term present. But for those of us who care about how Matt Hancock conducted himself in office, his latest contribution to public life is enough to induce nausea. In his case, we all too clearly see the man behind the tan.
