Hundreds of people came together for Manchester's first Anti-Poverty Summit
When most people in Manchester hear the name Chorlton, they think of a quirky south Manchester suburb lined with trendy bars and restaurants and home to well-off professionals and families.
But over recent months it's been achieving more than anyone thought possible, pulling in funding for community projects and helping families get the financial and practical support they so desperately need. "We started in April 2022, by printing out 5,000 flyers to give out to the community just highlighting what support there is and asking people what they need."
She says there's still 'a certain stigma' attached to seeking help, but it's only when someone takes that first step, that their problems begin to unravel and can be dealt with. As well as helping to pay for the flyers, it's paid for winter warmer packs, extra food stock for the local foodbank and Quids In food club and slow cookers which some residents will receive after completing a cookery course.
"From realising I had serious issues regarding money, housing, food and loneliness, BMCA picked me up and gave me the support I needed meaning that I am still here today," he said. The success of the pilot at BMCA was highlighted at Manchester's first Anti-Poverty Summit held in the city centre this month.
"It is a crisis service to try to help people for a few weeks, but we do get the same people coming back over a long period of time because they are reliant on it. Their situation isn't changing and there's no other help for them."
