What does Johnson’s future hold? Some speculate about another political comeback But the numbers above don’t exactly paint the ideal backdrop for a comeback and it is unclear “how” it would happen 🖊️ keiranpedley
It is fair to say. A committee of MPs has reported that former Prime Minister Boris Johnson deliberately misled parliament over lockdown parties at No 10 and they would have recommended a 90-day suspension from parliament had he not pre-emptively resigned as an MP last week..
Whatever your view of the Privileges Committee’s findings, public opinion on Boris Johnson has been negative for a while. Recent Ipsos polling shows 57 per cent of Britons are unfavourable towards him, similar to the 60 per cent that were unfavourable when he announced his intention to resign as Prime Minister last summer. Public trust in Johnson has been in short supply for some time.
What does Johnson’s future hold? Some speculate about another political comeback. However, given he is no longer in parliament – and Conservative MPs appeared to move on when choosing Rishi Sunak as Prime Minister – it is hard to imagine. The numbers above don’t exactly paint the ideal backdrop for a comeback and it is unclear “how” it would happen.
Yet Johnson’s presence over the Conservative Party looms large. Dozens of Tory MPs were prepared to support a second Johnson premiership last year and our polling shows three in 10 2019 Conservative voters still prefer Johnson as Prime Minister to Rishi Sunak . Whilst support for Johnson may be waning, it still exists. And that makes him a problem for the current Prime Minister.
