How hot does it have to be before you can stop working or your office has to shut?

Over the next couple of days, many people will have to work in unprecedented 40C heat. There is currently no law, or even guidance, for a maximum temperature limit.

This is because some workplaces are constantly hot all of the time, such as kitchens. Employers are instead guided by the Health and Safety Executive , who instruct the need to keep environments at a “reasonable” temperature for the “thermal comfort” of their employees. The Trades Union Congress workers' union wants to make it illegal to keep people at work indoors if the temperature is above 30C .

Vulnerable employees' requirements will also have to be taken into consideration by employers, such as those who are pregnant or who need to wear protective equipment at work so are unable to take off layers. The HSE also advises working slower if you're in danger of overheating and to ensure you inform your employer.

The heat can also cause issues for commuting, evidenced by speed restrictions being put in place on Monday and Tuesday on the rail network, duly lengthening journey times. Rail commuters have been urged to travel only if necessary and outside rush-hour if possible.
