It should be possible for society to invest in scientific and medical innovation, and provide people with liveable maternity pay , which has been hailed as the “dawn of a new era” in fertility treatment. A 40-year-old woman, who already had two children, donated her uterus to her 34-year-old sister, who had been born without a womb. The surgery, which took nine hours and 20 minutes and was carried out at the Churchill Hospital in Oxford, has so far proven successful.

While the NHS has not funded this transplant – it was paid for by the charity Womb Transplant UK – Kate Brintworth, NHS England chief midwifery officer, welcomed the development. She said it would give people “the priceless chance of carrying a baby.” There are hopes, should further operations be successful, that one day this procedure will be available on the NHS.were only brought to market in the 70s, giving women new agency over their reproductive choices.
