Not much has gone right for the Warriors this season. As it currently stands, Golden State has a puncher’s chance to repeat as champions. Luckily they also have Stephen Curry. ThompsonScribe on how Curry's magic gives the team a glimmer of hope.
Saturday was a sign of the urgency Curry feels. He turns 35 on Tuesday. The Warriors seemed to finally turn a corner while he was out. He was supposed to return from his knee injury and take them to another level. But then they lost three straight winnable games on the road, making it clear they still hadn’t found their championship form. They’re getting all the breaks they need. The Western Conference around them continues to keep the door cracked with injuries and mediocrity.
“There are times,” Curry said, “that you find yourself searching in a sense of like, ‘What are we missing? Like with execution, and game-plan discipline, and rotations, all of that. There’s frustration there. Then there’s frustration in, like, individually you think you can play better. And that’s where you should start. Sometimes it doesn’t always happen that way, but point to yourself first and then figure out what you can do to get better.
More than a championship defense is riding on how they close this season. The era Curry anchored hangs in the balance. An uncertain future beckons. The only possible way to prevent the end of their dynasty, and possibly the end of their stint as valiant contenders, is to prove to be true contenders once more. Make one more run, one worthy of their salaries and reputation. But nothing about how this year has gone suggests they have that in them. From the off-court drama, to the injuries, to their inconsistent play, this has been the most frustrating of seasons for the Warriors. Yet, after Saturday, a glimmer of hope remains.
