🎄 The surprisingly good-value Christmas multi-city break that costs £150 per day Swap costly hotel rooms for a festive river cruise complete with all-you-can-eat breakfasts buffets 🛳️

in Vienna is £104. Unlimited drinks packages on board are extra: priced at £100 per person for the trip. Alcohol on board isn’t expensive though. A pint of beer is £3.50. For extra Christmas spirit, a Baileys on the rocks comes in at £5.Unlike an Airbnb city break, passengers on board are indulged with an all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet and a three-course lunch in between sight-seeing. At 7pm, a four-course dinner is served, always ending on a bottomless cheese board.

Although Budapest is cold, the weather doesn’t seem to deter the revellers. St Stephen’s Basilica hosts the city’s most popular market: Advent Feast. Arranged in the shadow of Hungary’s sixth largest church, its popularity is primarily in its setting. In this central city market, food takes priority. Goulash lines the stalls, alongside roasted goose leg, potato pancakes, chimney cakes and Beigli, a Hungarian Christmas cake made of poppy seeds.

The next day, after lunch, we set sail for Bratislava, Slovakia. This route takes us via the Danube Bend, a rare sharp turn in’s central river. Hills and churches line the bank. On arrival, I take a guided tour to Bratislava’s mediaeval castle before making my way to its Christmas markets. The temperature feels even colder, although it doesn’t drop below freezing and the mist makes the air seem on the cusp of snow.Slovakia is still a fairly unknown Christmas destination.

Known as the home of classical music, Vienna is unsurprisingly a more expensive city than Budapest and Bratislava. I queue patiently for 30 minutes to get into the well-known Café Sacher for one of Vienna’s famous chocolate tortes and a coffee, which costs me €15.
