Gruesome mystery of teenage boy who arrived in Cumbria with 'holes in his head eaten by vermin'

It all started 170 years ago, in the once busy port of Maryport. A ship docked one day carrying a 16-year-old boy, who was thought to have travelled from America with a companion. But while he set off a fit and healthy teenager, his state when he arrived was truly shocking.

Miller was believed to be healthy when he boarded the Brig, but just four days after arriving in Maryport, he was dead. The shock of his passing rocked the small town, and news of his truly terrible condition just before he passed away soon spread. All townsfolk could talk about was the young boy and what could have possibly happened to him. While en-route to Cumbria, the youngster was taken down with typhus fever and confined to a narrow bunk where he was to be taken care of by Sparrow.

The inquiry in front of the coroner lasted a whole day, until 6pm but the jury discussed it until 4am and couldn't decide if he had died of natural causes or manslaughter at the hands of Sparrow. One witness describe the care that Sparrow gave and said: "I never knew Sparrow neglect him. But he has beaten him. He only beat him once for dirtying his bunk. I don't think he meant to harm him he beat him with spun yarn."
