The entire population of the island was killed in the cave
Despite a population of around 100, the small island in the Inner Hebrides is a popular tourist destination and sees around 10,000 visitors each year.
Likely the most famous inhabitants of the island were the clan of MacDonald, who lived there for hundreds of years until they met a grizzly end at the hands of a rival clan in 1577. Learning of the violent fate that was about to befall them, almost the entirety of Clan MacDonald sought refuge in the well-hidden Cave of Francis. The opening of the cave was very slim, which helped conceal it but meant that only a few people could enter at a time.
