One child on average dies from choking every month in the UK and Christmas brings with it extra dangers
From rushing to open presents to feasting on sweets, Christmas is always joyful but full of activity when there are kids around.
But according to the education experts at Skillstg.co.uk, this can make the festive season one of the worst times for choking hazards. An excess of snacks, small toys, excitement and family gatherings can increase the risks. According to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, one child on average dies from choking each month in the UK, with hundreds more needing medical treatment.Choking happens when a patient's airway becomes blocked, causing an inability to breathe. Children have especially narrow airways which heightens their risk of choking.
With that in mind, here is a list of the top 12 choking hazards for children, as well as tips for how to help a baby or young child who appears to be choking.Popcorn is a delicious snack enjoyed safely by many. But it's recommended children don't eat popcorn until they are fully able to chew and swallow properly, at age four or five. Popcorn has a shape and texture that is very likely to get caught in the airways, not to mention its light weight that allows it to be inhaled easily.
What to do if a child under one is choking Firstly, you should check the child's mouth.
