'It's a disaster'
He was just a young man when he was asked to move to Australia for work – offering him a brand new life on the other side of the world.
“It makes you feel ashamed. I had a heart attack and sepsis and had to finish work early. That’s the reason we’re in this situation. William and his wife, who live in Heywood, decided to switch to a prepayment meter once they realised they were struggling to pay their bills at the end of every month. “When we go to the supermarket, it’s another third put onto the bill. There’s no reason for it. I don’t understand why it’s gone up so much – and I don’t think things will turn around soon.”
But while families wait for help, many are struggling. Ki Valentine, from Middleton, fears people will turn to crime if they are pushed into desperate situations. One woman, who did not wish to give her name, told the MEN rising costs is a “worry” that’s “always there in the back of the mind”.“It’s taking the mickey. You go to the supermarket and it’s not gone up by 10p, it’s gone up by 40p, 50p.
