where Lee Zeldin, the Republican gubernatorial candidate, is rapidly closing in on Kathy Hochul, the Democratic incumbent.House Representative, has slashed Ms Hochul’s 20-point lead over the summer to just four points with a week to go until the vote.
It is an extraordinary feat considering that in New York Democrats outnumber Republicans 2 to 1, and is a worrying sign for the party at a national level. Ms Hochul’s rise to office in August last year contained the seeds which led to her downfall. She was New York state’s lieutenant governor, the second in command after the governor, who at the time was Andrew Cuomo.Even though Democrats cheered the fact she was the first woman to hold the post, Mr Cuomo’s antics soured voters on the party which has become complacent after decades in power.
In 2019 the Democrat-controlled state Senate eliminated cash bail for most misdemeanours and non-violent felonies. Rather than defendants having to pay all or a certain percentage of their bail to get free, the practice was scrapped because it was thought to unfairly target ethnic minorities and the poor by forcing them to remain in custody until trial.
